Hanoi isn't just Vietnam's capital — it's the country's living memory. Few cities in Southeast Asia wear a thousand years of history so casually, layered beneath French colonial facades, smoky street kitchens, and the perpetual hum of motorbikes.
The Old Quarter (Phố Cổ) is the beating heart of the city — a labyrinth of 36 guild streets, each once dedicated to a single trade. Silk, tin, paper, herbs — the names still stick. Lose yourself walking it on foot.
Hoan Kiem Lake anchors the city center. At dawn, elderly residents do tai chi along its banks. At dusk, it glows gold. The red Thê Húc Bridge and Ngọc Sơn Temple on the island are iconic in every sense.
Street food culture here is unmatched — phở sipped on a plastic stool, bún chả smoky from the grill, bánh mì crispy and loaded. Hanoi arguably makes the best versions of all three.
History runs deep: the Temple of Literature (1070 AD), Hỏa Lò Prison, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology each offer a different lens on the country's layered past.
Hanoi rewards the curious traveler. It's grittier and more authentic than Ho Chi Minh City, less touristy than Hội An, and endlessly walkable. The pace is slower, the coffee culture is serious (cà phê trứng — egg coffee — was invented here), and the locals carry a distinct northern pride. It also serves as the perfect gateway to Hạ Long Bay, Sapa, and Ninh Bình.
The sweet spot is October to April — cooler, drier, and far more comfortable for walking. October–November brings a crisp golden light that photographers love. Avoid July–August if you can: it's hot, humid, and rainy. Tết (Lunar New Year) in late January or February is magical if you embrace the chaos, but expect many shops to close.
Hanoi is served by Nội Bài International Airport (HAN), with direct flights from most major Asian hubs and connections from Europe and beyond. From the airport, a taxi or Grab to the Old Quarter takes about 40–50 minutes. Once in the city, walk the Old Quarter, grab a xe ôm for short hops, and book a day trip by bus or train to nearby destinations.
